Xiaomi is reportedly gearing up to introduce its inaugural electric car model(Xiaomi Modena sedan)this year, aligning its release with the launch of the Xiaomi 14 smartphone.
This development was disclosed by an unnamed inside source, as Xiaomi has not officially confirmed these plans.
The exact timing of the Xiaomi 14 phone launch remains unclear, with speculation suggesting it might occur as early as October or on Singles Day, November 11th.
Recent reports have spotlighted Xiaomi’s foray into the automobile industry with their car project named Modena.
The National Development and Reform Commission granted approval for car manufacturing, drawing attention to Xiaomi’s factory located in Beijing’s Daxing industrial park. Currently, the factory is in the trial production phase, producing approximately 50 prototypes per week.
Final production approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is expected in the coming months.
Xiaomi has already initiated the recruitment process for factory workers, aiming to hire around 100 individuals.
Notably, this recruitment process is characterized by its stringent criteria. Some candidates with prior experience at established automakers like Mercedes and Tesla were not selected.
It’s important to note that this round of hiring is part of the preparation phase, with large-scale recruitment expected to commence at the end of this year or the start of the next, coinciding with the onset of mass production.
Recent spy shots have unveiled Xiaomi’s maiden electric sedan, referred to as the MS11. This model offers an extended-range version equipped with a 101-kWh ternary (NMC) battery, capable of covering a remarkable 800 km on a single charge. It also supports 800V DC charging.
The battery itself weighs 642 kg, boasting a voltage of 726.7 V and a rated capacity of 139.0 Ah. The energy density stands at 157 Wh/kg.
Pricing of Xiaomi Modena sedan-
Xiaomi’s Modena sedan is projected to enter the market with a starting price of 200,000 yuan (approximately 27,400 USD).
It will face competition in the 200k yuan range from other Chinese EV sedans like the Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal, Deepal SL03, and several others.
